Do I need a trailer registration plate?

Current GOV.UK guidance says trailers over 750kg must be registered before driving to or through most countries in Europe. Registration is not required for UK-only use, journeys between the UK and Ireland, or use in Cyprus, Malta or Spain. However, travelling through a country where the rules apply can still make registration necessary.

Check the current GOV.UK trailer registration guidance before travelling.

    How to order

    1. Register the trailer with DVLA and receive its unique trailer registration number.
    2. Choose Acrylic Plate or Reflective Sticker Plate.
    3. Enter the trailer registration number shown on the DVLA document.
    4. Upload the required documents during ordering or email them afterwards.
    5. We check the details before producing the plate in the correct two-line format.

    Documents we need

Provide the eV948/2 trailer number-plate authorisation sent by DVLA, or the Trailer Registration Certificate if the email authorisation has expired. We also need an accepted document proving the customer’s identity and address.

The eV948/2 is valid for five days. Upload the documents with the order or email them when convenient; we will follow up if they have not arrived. Production does not begin until the documentation has been checked.

    See current DVLA INF291 guidance.

    Official layout and specification

    • One letter followed by seven numbers; DVLA does not issue trailer registrations beginning with C.
    • Displayed over two lines, for example A123 above 4567.
    • Solid black characters on a white background, with no design, pattern or texture.
    • Standard lettering, required character dimensions and spacing, plus the supplier or manufacturer details.
    • No border, badge, slogan or identifier is added to the registration area.

Manufactured to the Trailer Registration Regulations 2018 and current DVLA INF291 specification. Trailer registration plates do not need a BS AU 145e mark.

    Where to fit the plate

Display the trailer registration plate at the rear in a visible, vertical position and as far as reasonably possible from the towing vehicle’s plate. If it cannot be displayed at the rear, a plate must be fitted to both sides so both are clearly visible.

One plate is supplied per unit. Select quantity 2 if your fitting position requires one plate on each side.

    Before travelling abroad

Carry the Trailer Registration Certificate so it can be shown to a foreign authority if requested. A separate UK sticker may also be required or recommended for the trailer. Do not place the UK sticker on the trailer registration plate.

    Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as my towing vehicle’s number plate?

No. This product displays the trailer’s own unique registration issued by DVLA. The towing vehicle’s registration plate must also remain displayed separately.

    How many plates are included?

Each unit contains one plate. Select quantity 2 if you need one plate for each side of the trailer.

Can I send the documents after ordering?

Yes. Choose “Email after ordering” and send them when convenient. We will send a follow-up email if they have not been received. The plate is produced only after the documentation has been checked.

Should I choose acrylic or a sticker plate?

Choose acrylic for a conventional rigid plate. The reflective sticker option is intended for a clean, smooth, flat and vertical surface where it can remain fully visible and undistorted. If you are uncertain about the mounting surface or requirements for your route, choose acrylic.

Does a trailer registration plate need BS AU 145e?

No. GOV.UK states that trailer registration plates do not need to conform to the British Standard. They must instead follow the Trailer Registration Regulations 2018 and current DVLA trailer-plate specification.

Requirements can change. Check current GOV.UK guidance and the rules for every country on your route before travelling.
