Dependent on the age of your vehicle, there may be limits as to what plates can go on to your vehicle. This is essential to note down before you make your choice.

Where the personalised number plate has an age identifier (namely current style, prefix and suffix numbers, you can only place that figure onto a vehicle of equivalent age or newer. For example, if you buy a 58 current style registration, it can only go onto a car that was first recorded as new on or after 1st September 2008.

In order to have a personalised number assigned to your vehicle’s plate, the vehicle must be:

• A suitable age to receive the registration number
• Registered or about to be registered in the UK (excluding the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) in your name or in the name of the Nominee
• Taxed or being taxed at the time of the submission
• A type that requires an MoT or Goods Vehicle Test (GVT) certificate.

Only vehicles that are listed as being in GB and NI can join in the Personalised Registrations system. As a result, vehicles registered in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are disqualified from this.

The DVLA did at one time consider selling Q prefix registrations for use only on Q registered vehicles but due to the related costs, it was decided upon not to go ahead with it. An evaluation of registration inspection processes also specified very strong support for holding the existing policy on Q registrations, for consumer security reasons.
