The Owner of ‘F1’ number plate puts it up for sale for £10 million

Afzal Khan broke a British record when he purchased the 109 year old custom number plate six years ago and now seeks to make it one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive car registrations.

The designer, who was born in Bradford, initially acquired the license plate from Essex County Council in 2008 for £440,000 where it was in operation at that time by then chairman Gerard McEwen on a Volvo S80. Now it is being promoted and advertised for £10,009,995 with a dealer who previously listed the plate with X1 on it, for £1million in 2012.

The bewildering figure for the 109-year-old number plate is nearly enough to buy an entire village in Devon, which lately went up for sale for the sum of £11 million. The fact that villages also go on the market is equally astounding.

Mr Khan allegedly refused a £6million bid for the plate at some time last year, prompting calls that the county council could have asked for a lot more when he originally bought it from them. A council spokesperson said when it was originally sold: “We got the best price for it at the time we sold it and it still remains the highest ever value for a number plate in the UK.”

The most costly number plate ever shifted is thought to be at the number 1 still, which was bought for £14million by Saeed Khouri at a charity auction abroad.
